The beer industry in Serbia represents a significant economic and social factor, contributing to employment, investment growth, and economic development. Through continuous investments and development, the members of the Brewers Association of Serbia have strengthened the sector and positioned it as one of the key pillars of the national economy.

According to the latest EY study on the economic impact of the beer industry in Serbia (2024), the beer sector currently supports over 16,270 jobs, with the hospitality and retail sectors employing the majority. The financial contribution to the state continues to grow – in 2023, the beer sector generated €314 million in revenue for the national budget through excise duties, VAT, social and pension contributions, corporate taxes, and other levies.

Despite global market fluctuations and economic challenges impacting the beer sector, the industry has demonstrated resilience and stability, recording an 8.39% increase in exports, while imports declined by 32.76%, indicating the strengthening of domestic production and the growing competitiveness of Serbian beer in the international market.

Beyond its economic contribution, the beer industry strongly relies on sustainability and the development of local suppliers. In 2023, the Association’s members made procurements worth €259 million, with 73.4% of materials and raw materials sourced from domestic suppliers, directly supporting Serbian agriculture and the national economy.

Additionally, through investments in environmental protection, the members of the Brewers Association of Serbia actively work on reducing CO₂ emissions, recycling packaging, and improving wastewater treatment systems. At the same time, they conduct responsible alcohol consumption campaigns in collaboration with government institutions, promoting social responsibility and public health awareness.

The beer industry remains a stable pillar of the national economy, employment, and sustainable development, while simultaneously improving the business environment and supporting local communities.

The Contribution of the Beer Industry During the COVID-19 Pandemic

In 2020, when the global pandemic significantly altered business operations and social life, the companies within the Brewers Association of Serbia demonstrated a high level of responsibility and solidarity. Through various initiatives and support programs, they allocated over €500,000 to assist the healthcare system, local communities, and business partners.

Donations were directed towards:

  • The Ministry of Health of Serbia and the Republic Health Insurance Fund.
  • Clinical and hospital centers in Zemun and Zvezdara.
  • Protective equipment for local communities, healthcare institutions, and partners in the HoReCa sector.

Additionally, throughout the pandemic, breweries continued to invest in local infrastructure projects and support cultural and sports organizations, further contributing to social recovery.
